The Road So Far:
A Journey from Archaeology to Digital Storytelling: Crafting a New Vision
My career path has been anything but conventional. Spanning over a decade, it has taken me from the ancient sands of Jordan to the serene landscapes of Japan, weaving through the realms of archaeology and travel writing. This eclectic journey has shaped my perspective uniquely, preparing me for an exciting new chapter in the tech industry, particularly in game design, narrative design, and digital storytelling.
Unearthing the Past, Envisioning the Future
As an archaeologist, I delved deep into the histories and cultures that form the bedrock of our civilization. In Jordan, I explored remnants of bygone eras, each artifact whispering stories of the past. In Japan, my work involved unraveling the intricate tapestry of a culture where tradition and modernity coexist seamlessly. This experience granted me a profound appreciation for storytelling, an element I aim to infuse into my future tech endeavors.
The Philosophical Quest
My journey also led me to follow in the footsteps of the Buddha, embracing the philosophical quest for understanding and enlightenment. This spiritual exploration was complemented by engaging in debates with contemporary thinkers like Slavoj Zizek, challenging and refining my perspectives on life, society, and technology.
A Poetic Parallel
Parallel to my professional career, I nurtured a passion for poetry, drawing inspiration from the likes of Arthur Rimbaud. This creative outlet allowed me to express the myriad experiences and insights gleaned from my travels and studies. Poetry, with its nuanced expression and depth, became a medium through which I explored the human condition.
Stepping into the World of Tech
Now, as I embark on a new venture into the tech industry, I bring with me a rich tapestry of experiences and skills. My background in archaeology and travel writing has equipped me with a unique lens through which to view game design and narrative creation. The philosophical debates and poetic explorations have provided me with a depth of understanding and creativity that I plan to channel into digital storytelling.
Envisioning a New Future
In game design and digital storytelling, I see a confluence of all my past experiences. Here, the narratives of ancient civilizations, the philosophical musings, and the poetic expressions find a new form. My aim is to create games and digital narratives that are not only engaging and entertaining but also deeply enriching and thought-provoking, offering players and audiences a glimpse into the diverse experiences that have shaped my journey.
A Tapestry of Experiences
As I step into this new realm, I carry with me a vision shaped by a decade of diverse experiences. From the deserts of Jordan to the tech studios, my journey is a testament to the power of interdisciplinary experiences in crafting innovative paths. In the intersection of archaeology, philosophy, poetry, and technology, I find a new frontier for exploration and creation, one that promises to redefine the boundaries of game design and digital storytelling.
Now: Graduate School, Narrative Design, Working with Pokémon, and The University of Missouri
As a student of a program that intertwines game design with educational theory, I feel a profound sense of responsibility and excitement about being part of this innovative movement. This journey isn’t just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about becoming an advocate for a transformative approach in education and technology.
Realizing the Potential
Understanding the concepts of gameful design and the 4Rs has been an eye-opener. It’s clear that these strategies can make learning more engaging and relevant, especially in our technology-driven age. Seeing the potential, I feel a duty to contribute to this shift, to bring about a change in how we perceive and approach education.
A Personal Mission
I am motivated to share these insights with peers, educators, and anyone interested in the future of learning. This goes beyond classroom discussions. It’s about initiating conversations, participating in forums, and possibly even collaborating on projects that showcase the effectiveness of gameful learning.
Bridging Theory and Practice
My role involves not just understanding theories but also exploring practical applications. Whether it’s through creating simple educational games or initiating study groups to discuss these concepts, the goal is to bridge the gap between theory and real-world application.
Advocacy through Innovation
I envision myself as part of a community that innovates and experiments. By engaging in projects that apply gameful design in educational settings, I can help demonstrate the value of these methods. This hands-on involvement is crucial for both personal growth and the advancement of gameful learning.
Preparing for Challenges
I’m aware that advocating for a new approach isn’t without challenges. It requires persistence, creativity, and a willingness to engage with skeptics. I am prepared to articulate the benefits of this approach, drawing on the wealth of knowledge from thinkers like McLuhan, McGonigal, and others.
A Journey of Impact
Being a student in this field is more than an educational experience; it’s a journey towards being an influential part of a larger movement. It’s about harnessing the power of games to transform learning and preparing ourselves and others for a future where education is dynamic, engaging, and deeply impactful. My journey in this course is not just about learning; it’s about becoming a harbinger of change and innovation in the realm of education and technology.
